Salí de una nación en guerra hacia un horizonte de paz y prosperidad, Señoría. Crucé algunas fronteras hasta que comenzaron a llamarme refugiado. Entonces ya no me dejaron continuar. Frente a mí una alambrada y un campo donde ir lentamente muriendo. Un abogado trató de explicarnos a todos nuestra situación legal pero en su voz no había esperanza alguna. ¿Se imagina usted que le obligaran a rendirse? ¿Se imagina un lugar construido para los vencidos? Escapé de noche, Señoría, y subí a un barco repleto de otros como yo. El continente parecía alejarse de nosotros a medida que avanzábamos. Entonces el barco se escoró bruscamente, caímos al agua y pocos sobrevivimos. Yo sigo abrazado a los cuerpos de los ahogados, flotando todavía en la inmensidad del mar. Ojalá algún día pudiera repetirle todo esto, Señoría, y mis palabras no fueran llenándose lentamente de espuma y sal.
